When I was trying to find the reason of my departure, the only images I could picture in my mind were slow motion shots of me dying and being born again, in a completely different reality. My life was like an old oak tree being uprooted from a fertile soil that was not going to accept a replantation.

Today is the last day of winter,
likewise is the last day of winter in my soul.

As simple and as complex as that.
I cannot forget you,
but I still can burn you,

Those imprinted memories will not be vanished
but transformed.

Matter cannot be created nor destroyed.
So are my memories about you, decomposing underground,
transforming.

Transformation is my hope,
the generation of something different and more substantial than you.

My hands smell like smoke and ashes... that must be the smell of freedom.

Pirá has been captivated by the enemy´s tribe. Prisoners of war are to be sentenced to death or life slavery.

The sunset that day was longer than usual. Pirá had just finished her sentinel responsibilities at the tropical forest´s sea cliff, when the intense and hot sunlight penetrated her eyes fortuitously. Her sight was for a moment obstructed, and she just saw shadows appearing intermittently in the warm dusk setting.

Neither of her companions was there to see what was about to happen. Foreign warriors were disembarking from one medium size ship which arrived unnoticed to the west side of the bay. As soon as Pirá started seeing again after being blinded by the sunlight, three invincible warriors took her by the back and tied her, leaving no time for her to resist.

Pirá had failed on her protector duties, just because the sunlight was so dazzling she could not see at the moment they arrived.

In her mind a billion questions begun to puzzle her. How come the most beautiful manifestation of universe could be so disturbing to obstruct her awareness? Isn´t it fair for any human being no matter what responsibility he holds, to just enjoy and be fascinated by simple details of life? Or is it that is only reserved for other people different from her, people who are so sensitive that cannot deal with war strategies? If she is sensitive but also brave enough to fight in war, is she being a good or bad warrior? Can she be blamed by her own tribe for being so careless?.

She found a million answers on her way to the enemy´s base. But only one seemed to draw the line around her universe. That answer was Freedom. Being slave as a prisoner of war and being a warrior for her people was not going to grant her freedom.

The tribe was in danger now; one thousand people were put at risk because of her error. However, what happened to her as an individual?. She was blinded by the sunlight, she enjoyed it as never before, she felt the power of its energy and that was invaluable.

Once she got to her destination they offered her a choice. Either she becomes a slave or dies in fire. There will always be pain along the way to gain freedom, she thought. Hence she decided to be burned and she felt proud of herself for once again challenging the conventions. Red, yellow, orange and black, those were her last liberating heartbeats.

Do not die again.

The sepia image of that scenery seemed to recite the melancholy of her future.

Once the knight errant dismounted his ill-starred horse after an almost interminable odyssey, he was seen from the distance by the princess,who saw him as if he were coming from "the warm orange horizon". He looked at her as if he were seizing his last heartbeats.

No word was said. Just a suggestive farewell enclosed in volatile glances between two people who did not understand the meaning of that life confluence.

He swooned and his languid body remained on the dusty road while the oblivious princess began a calvary of unjustified guilts. She lived blaming herself for something she could not comprehend.

The death of that anonymous knight errant stayed with her for the rest of her days. However, five hundred years later, a joyful three year old girl dreamt of this outlying incident and the same guilt reappeared in her innocent heart. She lived twenty one years fearing death and fairy tales. Her life turned to be as dense as the princess's.

Nevertheless, this girl recognised the knight errant of her dream in one of her journeys. Now she just wishes he doesn´t die or desappear again. Like sand passing through her fingers.

I remember myself standing on a dusty and empty road, where nobody else was but your distant presence approaching from the horizon. At that time there were no signs of my current identity. This was a memory encoded centuries ago where I was not me and you were not you. However, we had the same souls.

Catholic by tradition but open- minded and free by nature.

There is a god. But what is god? Is it the unexplained force that triggered the creation of universe and keeps it going? Is it the beauty and ugliness we create as conscious animals? Is it nature? Is it our mind? Is it what makes us believe in fate? Is it love and hatred? I'm not sure, I just know I can't ignore it/him/her.
